A Note from Ms. Alston:

It gives me great honor to present a collection of recent works by
artist Pheoris West.

In 1974, at the age of 23, Pheoris West was the youngest artist to
have had a solo show at the Studio Museum in Harlem.

I was so taken by his art that I visited his studio at Yale where he
was studying for his MFA. The figurative works I saw then were
vibrant, exciting, full of motion, color and life. In the years since, I
have exhibited Pheoris’ work many times and have had the pleasure
of watching his dynamic progression as an artist, as he blended the
modern and traditional, the figurative and the abstract. His recent
collection of collages is something entirely new and exhilarating,
and I am delighted that he has chosen to show them at Peg Alston
Fine Arts.

Pheoris has received numerous awards and recognition of his art,
and his works are  included in the collections of the Philadelphia
Museum of  Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Museo Civico D’
arts Contemporaneo Di Gibilina, Italy, and many other prestigious
institutions. Pheoris serves on the National Endowment of the Arts
Expansion Arts Panel and the Ohio Arts Council.

Currently, Pheoris is on sabbatical from Ohio State University
College of the Arts, where he has been an associate professor since
1976, and is working on a series of four commissions for the
University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
